Headbox

The headbox is a critical hydraulic unit located at the wet end of a paper machine. Its primary function is to transform the stock flow from the piping system into a uniform, rectangular discharge across the entire width of the forming fabric (wire)

The headbox is a critical core component of a paper machine, located at the start of the forming section. It acts as the “distribution center” for pulp, receiving the prepared pulp slurry and uniformly, stably, and continuously jetting it onto the moving forming fabric (wire cloth) at a precise velocity matching the fabric speed.

Key Functions

  1. Uniform Pulp Distribution: It ensures the pulp is spread evenly across the full width of the forming fabric, which is essential for producing paper with consistent thickness and weight.
  2. Stabilize Flow: Eliminates turbulence and air bubbles in the pulp slurry to prevent defects like holes or streaks in the finished paper.
  3. Velocity Matching: Synchronizes the pulp jet speed with the forming fabric speed to avoid fiber orientation issues and improve paper strength uniformity.

Core Design Features

  • Equipped with flow distributors (e.g., perforated plates, turbulence generators) to optimize pulp flow.
  • Built with corrosion-resistant materials (stainless steel) to withstand the wet, abrasive papermaking environment.
  • Adjustable pulp concentration and jet angle to adapt to different paper grades (e.g., cultural paper, packaging paper, tissue).

Significance

A high-performance headbox directly determines the formation quality of the wet paper web, which is a foundational factor affecting the final paper’s physical properties and surface smoothness.
