Low-consistency cleaner

Centrifugal device for purifying dilute pulp (0.8%–3.0% consistency) by removing fine heavy impurities

The low-consistency cleaner is a specialized centrifugal impurity-removal device in papermaking pulping lines, designed to purify dilute pulp slurries (with a consistency typically ranging from 0.8% to 3.0%). It is a key downstream component after primary pulp screening, focusing on separating fine heavy and light contaminants from pulp to ensure pulp purity for high-grade paper production and protect precision downstream equipment.

Core Structure & Working Principle

  1. Basic Structure

A typical low-consistency cleaner features a compact, conical-cylindrical housing as its main body, along with three key ports: a tangential inlet (for pulp feeding), a top accepts outlet (for purified pulp discharge), and a bottom rejects outlet (for contaminant removal). The interior has a smooth, tapered cone that narrows toward the bottom, and some models are equipped with a small internal vortex finder tube to guide the flow of clean pulp. The device is usually made of wear-resistant materials like polyurethane or ceramic-lined steel to withstand friction from abrasive impurities.

  2. Operational Mechanism

Dilute pulp slurry is pumped into the cleaner at high speed through the tangential inlet, creating a strong rotational (vortex) flow inside the housing. Under centrifugal force, denser impurities (such as sand grains, metal particles, and hard wood debris) are thrown outward to the housing wall and slide down along the tapered cone to the bottom rejects outlet for collection and disposal. Meanwhile, lighter, clean pulp fibers remain in the central vortex of the flow, rise toward the top of the cleaner, and exit through the accepts outlet to the next pulping process. The low pulp consistency ensures the slurry maintains fluidity for stable vortex formation, enabling precise separation of even micro-scale impurities without excessive fiber loss or damage.

Key Functions & Application Scenarios

  • Fine Impurity Removal: Targets tiny heavy contaminants (down to tens of micrometers) that primary screens cannot eliminate, preventing defects like specks or spots in finished paper (especially cultural paper and fine printing paper).
  • Fiber Protection: Its low-consistency operating condition and smooth internal structure minimize fiber cutting or fibrillation, preserving the original fiber properties critical for paper strength.
  • Multi-stage Purification: Often arranged in multi-stage systems (primary, secondary, and tertiary cleaning) for deep impurity removal, meeting the strict purity standards of high-end paper products.
  • Downstream Equipment Safeguard: Eliminates abrasive impurities that could wear or damage refiner plates, paper machine rollers, and other precision components, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
